Nomenclature of Organic Compound

Mainly, there are three systems for the nomenclature of organic compounds

  1. Common Names or Trivial System
  2. Derived System
  3. IUPAC System

Common Name

Common Name for the organic compound is derived on the basis of source, property, Discovery, and Structure.

 

Common Names for Groups

Iso group

When one methyl group attaches to the second last carbon in the straight-chain, it is said to be an iso group.

Neo group

When two methyl groups on the second last carbon of straight-chain are attached to the other four carbon atom is called a neo group.

Secondary group

The carbon with free valency attached to two carbon is called secondary carbon. It is also termed as sec.

Tertiary Group

The carbon with free valency attached to three other carbon is called the tertiary group.
