Benzene

Benzene

Benzene is the first member of the arene. Benzene behaves like a saturated compound, although it is unsaturated.

Kekule Structure of Benzene

Kekule proposed that six carbon atoms in benzene are placed at the corner of hydrogen with an alternative single and double bonds.

Evidence of Kekule Structure

  1. Benzene combines with three molecules of hydrogen, chlorine or ozone, which confirms the presence of three double bonds.
  2. The study of magnetic rotation and molecular refraction conforms three double bonds to a conjugated system.
  3. The formation of benzene from three ethyne molecules also conforms to the structure.
