Naming of Alkanes

Naming of Alkanes

Remember these common rules while naming the organic compound.

  1. Longest Chain Rule: Determine the longest carbon chain in the organic compound.

One having the largest number of substituent is considered to be the longest carbon chain if two carbon chain is equal.

  1. Lowest Number Rule: The numbering of the longest chain should be done, such a keeping the attached substituents in the lowest possible position.
  2. Alphabetically list out the name, listing groups. However, di, tri, tetra, iso, neo, and sec. are not considered in alphabetical order.
  3. To separate numbers, We must use a comma (,). To separate a number and a letter, We must use a hyphen (-).
  4.  If different alkyl groups are numbered in the same position, the numbering of the longest carbon chain will be done in a way that makes the lowest alphabetical position gets the lowest alphabetical number.
  5. To name the cyclic compounds, ‘cyclo’ prefix is used before the longest carbon chain.
